The Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the European Parliament, George Lyon, has joined Orkney MSP, Liam McArthur, in condemning the plans by Europe to restrict animal transport times to eight hours. Like Liam McArthur, George Lyon believes that if these plans go ahead they would have a devastating impact on Scottish agriculture.

The top Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate for next year's elections to the European Parliament, George Lyon, visited Orkney last week to hear at first hand the issues concerning Orkney fishermen and farmers. Along with Orkney MSP, Liam McArthur, George Lyon met representatives of both these industries and he also visited EMEC to see for himself Orkney's world leading marine renewable energy testing station.

Commenting on the Scottish Government's announcement that Scotland will join European leaders in developing innovative transport initiatives to encourage more Scots out of their cars, Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson Alison McInnes said: "Although I welcome the Scottish Government's commitment to encouraging Scots out of their cars in favour of greener alternatives, it is no substitute for the more comprehensive funding that was previously available to all local authorities to support greener travel.
