Lyon campaigning for change in Europe.

12.00.00am GMT Wed 5th Dec 2007

George Lyon the former MSP for Argyll & Bute has been elected top of the Liberal Democrats European Parliament list. The current MEP Elspeth Attwool is retiring at the next election in June 2009.

Mr Lyon has worked extensively in Europe with the NFU and latterly representing the Scottish Executive on the European Committee of the Regions.

George Lyon said;

"There are many European issues that affect Argyll & Bute and I intend to campaign vigorously on them. I want to see changes to EU ferry tendering rules to better reflect the needs of Scottish Island communities. Huge sums of public money have been wasted in complying with them which would have been better spent on improving the services instead. I also intend to campaign against the EUs sheep tagging rules which are nothing more than a blatant attempt to load extra costs onto Scottish sheep producers and I want to see the EU take action to stop Scots being ripped off by phone companies who are grossly overcharging them for texting while on holiday in Europe."
