Full transparency of allowances needed - Lyon

10.00.00am GMT Mon 23rd Feb 2009

Commenting on reports that some Members of the European Parliament have been abusing the allowances system to pocket as much as £1million in a single five year term, Liberal Democrat Europe campaigner George Lyon said:

"Allowances are designed to allow MEPs to serve the public. They should never be allowed to serve individual members for personal gain.

"The Liberal Democrats blew the whistle on this scam, now we need to uncover who has been abusing the system to line their pockets. Only when we have full transparency of Parliament, whether in Edinburgh, London or Strasbourg, will the public have full confidence in those who represent them."
