12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 15th Jul 2009

Commenting after being invited to join the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee of the European Parliament, new Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland George Lyon said: "Scotland's voice in fighting for Scottish agriculture has just doubled in volume.

"With my colleagues I will use the support and funding that Europe can offer to help strengthen Scottish farming while continuing to oppose measures like EID that will seriously damage the industry.

"Scottish farmers can rest assured that my voice will never waver in standing up for their interests today, tomorrow and in the future."
