George Lyon, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland, has congratulated Hannah Paterson and Newfield Primary School in Stonehouse on winning his Christmas card design competition for 2009.

Mr Lyon visited the school to present Hannah, who is in Primary 7, with a framed copy of her winning design and a gift voucher. After the presentation the school held a special assembly with the children very interested to hear from Mr Lyon about his upcoming trip to the Copenhagen climate talks.

The Christmas card competition was entered by eighty schools across Scotland with over one hundred entries.

Commenting after visiting the school, Mr Lyon said:

"I was impressed by the sheer quality of the designs entered by all the schools that took part. There are certainly some budding young artists in primary schools across Scotland but Hannah's design stood out from the competition.

"Hannah is certainly a very worthy winner. Her design will be sent to over 4000 people across Scotland over the festive season.

"Newfield Primary School gave me a very warm welcome. My thanks go to Nan Burrell and all the staff at the school."
