It has not gone unnoticed that the price of petrol is creeping up again. This impacts on families right across Scotland but especially in rural areas where driving is a necessity, not a luxury. George Lyon MEP It will come as no surprise to those of you who regularly fill your car up that fuel can cost up to 10p more in rural areas than the national average. Liberal Democrats have consistently called on the UK and Scottish Governments to work together to curb these higher fuel prices in areas like rural Perthshire. Now Scottish Liberal Democrat MEP George Lyon has taken the fight to Europe. In other European countries, schemes designed to reduce the cost of fuel are used to lower the price by between 1.5 and 3.8 cents per litre. A few pence may not sound like a lot but it can be the difference between a local business succeeding or failing, or a pensioner being able to afford to heat their home or not. France, Portugal and Greece have all implemented fuel schemes like this to the benefit of their rural areas. The Liberal Democrats want Scotland’s rural areas to benefit in the same way. If other European countries have helped rural communities meet the cost of essential travel, we see no reason for any further delay in bringing the same benefits to Scotland.
