The Liberal Democrats are the first major political party to openly oppose the nomination of Tony Blair as President of the European Council. The reasons for doing so are compelling. The Council President will be Europe's face to the world. Tony Blair's face may be universally recognised, but for all the wrong reasons. It is incredible that the man responsible for the illegal invasion of Iraq, and the man who ignored millions across Europe who opposed the war, could be given the responsibility of representing us.
In taking us into the Iraq war Blair rode roughshod over our European neighbours who warned against it, angered Muslim nations who feared it, and circumvented the UN that tried to avert it. These are not the actions of the person you want to extend the European Union's influence in the world. There are continuing questions over Mr Blair's role in British complicity in the use of torture. No Government can support Mr Blair while his collusion with the Bush administration over extraordinary rendition and torture remains unclear. Liberal Democrats will fight tooth and nail to stop Blair becoming President of the European Council. If you agree that Blair is the wrong choice for Europe, for the UK, and for Scotland and then please sign the petition. With your help we can send the message loud and clear - we do not want President Blair.
